Family History [by Jesse T. Rees- 1956]

John W., the fifth child of John and Sophronia was born at Hyde Park, Utah on June 25, 1870. He was about eight years old when his parents purchased a farm in Benson and moved the family to their new home. His education was obtained in the public schools of Hyde Park and Benson. As John grew to manhood, he learned to love farm life and all the wonders of nature. He was particularly fond of horses and took great pride in driving the best that could be obtained.

On a hot, summer day in the year 1888, John was driving his father's sheep home from the summer range when he stopped at a farm to give his horse rest and water. Here he met and fell in love with Mary Hammer. After a short courtship, they decided to marry although both were quite young-- John, 18, Mary, 17. Mary was born in Smithfield on November 25, 1871.

In Logan of that year they were married in the Logan Temple. Following the ceremony a wedding supper and reception was held at Mary's home in Smithfield.

John and Mary lived in Smithfield for a few years, then moved to Benson where John helped his father with the farm. They built a home in Benson and spent the remainder of their lives there.

John was a good farmer and was happy and contented with his work. As more machinery came into use, he became adept at operating and repairing them. He owned one of the first grain binders in that area and for many years cut grain all over the valley. He also hauled milk from the farms to the factory. He was elected constable by his neighbors and fellow farmers, showing they respected his honesty and good judgment. He worked hard and except for Sundays took time off on rare occasions however, he never failed to attend the County Fair for three days nor to celebrate the 24th of July [the day the Mormons entered Salt Lake Valley].

Although he did not particularly seek out public or religious office, he encouraged his wife, Mary, to take part in community and church affairs. He was a cheerful baby-sitter while she worked in the ward as organist, Relief Society teacher, President of the YWMIA, etc. He was always very proud of her accomplishments.

John died on May 12, 1920; Mary died February 19, 1949. They are buried in the Hyde Park Cemetery.

John and Mary had the following children: Guy Leslie, Ronald, Clifford, Thresa May, John Lawrence, Elston Marion, Simpson Molen, Mary Viola, Teague Thain and Ruthvan LeRoy.
